House Mountain State Natural Area

Just a short drive from Knoxville, House Mountain State Natural Area offers a peaceful escape and also incredible views. The park’s main trail, a 4-mile loop, takes you to the summit of House Mountain, the highest point in Knox County.

I personally like to hike up the West Overlook Trail, then cross the top on the Crest Trail to the East Overlook. I think this is the best overlook for views. Then, I head down the Mountain Trail. I hike this trail often, and it amazes me how the flowers blooming change each time I hike, even if it’s week to week. Definitely one of my favorite trails to exhale and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Trail Length: 4 miles (loop)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: Panoramic views, diverse flora and fauna
  • Best Time to Visit: Year-round, with clear days for the best views

  • DOG FRIENDLY: Dogs must be on leash

Virgin Falls

Located near Sparta, the Virgin Fallsis an enchanting trail that leads to one of Tennessee’s most spectacular waterfalls. The 8-mile round trip hike takes you through dense forests, past multiple smaller waterfalls, and finally to the impressive Virgin Falls.

  • Location: Virgin Falls State Natural Area, Sparta, TN
  • Trail Length: 8 miles (round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
  • Highlights: Virgin Falls, smaller waterfalls, and also dense forests
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall for pleasant hiking conditions
  • Amenities: Also, be sure to plan accordingly there are no restrooms or picnic tables at the trailhead
