🚫 When You DON’T NEED a Smoky Mountain Parking Tag

There are a few times during your visit you won’t need a Smoky Mountains parking pass—let’s go over those details:

Short Stops in The Smokies Do Not Need A Pass

If you park for 15 minutes or less you DON’T NEED a pass. Perfect for quick pull-offs, stretching, or snapping a photo.

No Pass Needed for Frontcountry camping (AT your campsite)

No parking tag needed when frontcountry camping in the Smokies! If you’re planning on camping inside the Smoky Mountains at a designated campsite, your vehicle is covered while parked at your site. GSMNP has over 10 official frontcountry campgrounds including Elkmont, Cades Cove, Smokemont, Cosby, and more.

⚠️ BUT — you WILL need a pass if:

  • You park in public areas like restrooms, check-in stations, or overflow lots for more than 15 minutes
  • You’re parked anywhere else in the park outside your assigned campsite for more than 15 minutes
  • You’re backcountry camping and leaving your vehicle at a trailhead or parking lot for the entire time your car is parked

♿ Good to Know — Parking Tag Exemptions

Not everyone needs a parking tag in the Smokies! The following groups are exempt from the parking tag requirement:

  • School Groups
  • Permitted Researchers
  • Certain Special Use Permit Holders
  • Disabled Veterans with a valid placard or license plate
  • Vehicles displaying a valid handicap placard or license plate

  1. Hi, so my Mom has a handicap parking plaque but for the state of GA where we live. Ok to use it for parking? It says state issued handicap plaque but not which state.

    • Great question! In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, vehicles with a valid handicap placard or license plate do not need to purchase a parking tag. So your mom’s Georgia-issued placard is perfectly fine to use—just make sure it’s displayed clearly. These state-issued placards are recognized across all U.S. states. Hope y’all have a wonderful time exploring the Smokies!

    • Great question! The America the Beautiful pass covers entrance fees — but since Great Smoky Mountains National Park is already free to enter, it doesn’t apply here. The Park It Forward parking tag is a separate parking fee and is not covered by the pass. The good news is daily tags start at just $5! 🌲
