A Sweet Start: The Fun History of Donuts

Tray of glazed doughnuts!
Glazed and golden—donuts have come a long way from simple fried dough to sweet traditions we still enjoy today.

Ever wonder where donuts came from? They began as simple fried dough balls called olykoeks, brought to America by Dutch settlers in the 19th century.

Then in 1847, an American sailor named Hanson Gregory changed the game. He punched a hole in the center to help them cook more evenly—giving us the classic donut shape we know today.

Since then, donuts have evolved into the sweet, flavorful treats we all love. From powdered sugar to maple bacon, every bite is part of a tradition passed down through generations and kept alive by today’s local donut spots.

Birthday Donuts: Our Sweet Family Tradition

Assorted donuts to celebrate birthdays - donuts in Tennessee!
Sprinkles, sweetness, and celebration—because donuts have a way of making any day feel extra special.

When my kids were little, we had the sweetest tradition—breakfast in bed on their birthday. Each year started with a plate of donuts and a glass of chocolate milk. The chocolate-covered ones were always the favorite, but those powdered donuts made plenty of appearances too (and plenty of messes!).

It wasn’t fancy, but it made birthdays feel extra special. Over the years, it became one of those little things that meant a lot.

Now, whenever I stop by donut shops in Tennessee, I’m reminded of those cozy mornings and happy faces. From well-known bakeries to fun local donut spots, the tradition lives on in every sweet bite.
