So, preparing for your Christmas-time hikes in the Smokies ensures a safe, cozy, and enjoyable adventure for everyone. Winter hikes can be magical, but they require a little extra planning (especially with kids). Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  • Layer Up: Dress in warm layers, including a moisture-wicking base, a cozy middle layer, and a waterproof jacket (I always pack an extra change of clothes and socks in my backpack).
  • Pack Smart: Bring water, snacks, a trail map, and a small first-aid kit for peace of mind.
  • Know the Trail: Research your route in advance. I love using AllTrails to explore trail details and download maps before I go.
  • Start Early: With shorter winter days, plan to hit the trail early and carry a headlamp or flashlight, just in case.
  • Wear the Right Shoes: Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are a must for icy or uneven paths.
  • Plan Ahead: Let someone know your route and estimated return time before you head out.
  • Be Aware of Wildlife Safety: Stay safe on the trails—check out our wildlife safety guide HERE before your adventure begins!
