Riding the Gatlinburg SkyLift

This Tennessee adventure starts with a ride up the Gatlinburg SkyLift—the bright yellow chairlift that’s been carrying visitors up Crockett Mountain since 1954. It’s the oldest attraction in town and still one of the best ways to take in the Smokies.

Things to Do at Gatlinburg SkyPark

Once you step off the SkyLift, the mountaintop is yours to explore. Between the famous SkyBridge, the walking trails, and a few spots to sit and soak in the views, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours up here—longer if you stop for lunch.

Cross the Famous Gatlinburg SkyBridge

This is the one everyone comes for. The Gatlinburg SkyBridge stretches 680 feet across a deep mountain valley, making it the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. Walk out to the middle and you’ll find glass-floor panels looking straight down to the valley below—a little thrilling, a lot of fun. The views of Mount Le Conte and the surrounding Smokies from up here are some of the best in town.

Explore the Trails

The SkyBridge gets the attention, but there’s more to discover on foot. Several short trails wind across the mountaintop, each with its own views and a bit of quiet away from the crowds:

  • SkyTrail – A half-mile elevated boardwalk connecting both ends of the SkyBridge, with educational signs and access to the Tulip Tower
  • Black Bear Pass – A peaceful path with sweeping views of the Smokies and the bridge (keep your eyes open—you might spot wildlife)
  • Bobcat Loop – A half-mile trail with two scenic overlooks, great for a quick high-elevation escape
  • Towhee Trail – A gentle three-quarter-mile wooded descent that leads back down toward the base of the SkyLift

Climb the Tulip Tower

Along the SkyTrail you’ll come to the Tulip Tower, a 70-foot observation tower that’s worth the climb.

Make your way up via gently swaying rope bridges, stopping at the viewing platforms along the way for elevated looks at the Smokies from every level. It’s a favorite photo spot, so have your camera ready.

Relax at the SkyDeck

When you’re ready to slow down, the SkyDeck is the place to do it. Settle into comfortable seating or a glider with a view, warm up by an outdoor firepit on cooler days, and grab a drink from the SkyCenter—yes, adult beverages included. It’s pure mountaintop relaxation.

🌲 TREKKN TIP: Time your visit for late afternoon and stay for sunset—the view from the SkyDeck as the light drops over the Smokies is hard to beat.

Kick Back at Clayton’s Landing

Clayton’s Landing is the newest gathering spot at the top, and a great place to land after crossing the bridge. You’ll find comfortable seating, cozy firepits for chilly days, and easy access to food and drinks at Smoky Mountain Smash and Smoky Mountain Sips. With mountain views from nearly every seat, it’s an easy place to linger before heading back down.

Where to Eat at Gatlinburg SkyPark

All that walking and bridge-crossing works up an appetite, and the SkyPark has a few good spots to grab a bite or a drink without leaving the mountaintop. Here’s where to refuel.

Smoky Mountain Smash

Set right at Clayton’s Landing, Smoky Mountain Smash is your go-to for a real meal at the top. Think smash burgers, hand-cut fries, and casual favorites that hit the spot after a morning of exploring—best enjoyed with a mountain view.

Smoky Mountain Sips

Also at Clayton’s Landing, Smoky Mountain Sips is the place for something cold in hand, from cocktails and local beer to wine and non-alcoholic options. Grab a drink and sip slowly while you soak in the scenery.

SkyCenter Café

Located in the SkyCenter near the top of the SkyLift, this café is your spot for a quick coffee, a snack, or a sweet treat. It’s also the SkyPark’s main indoor space, so it’s a nice place to warm up, cool off, or just take a breather.
